Macros vs micros: what’s the difference?

FOOD & SCIENCEOct 3, 20261 min read

Protein. Carbs. Fat. Vitamins. Minerals. Nutrition language can quickly turn a simple meal into something that sounds surprisingly complicated.

But most of it starts with two groups: macronutrients and micronutrients.

meet your macros

“Macro” means large. Macronutrients are nutrients the body requires in relatively large quantities.

The three primary macronutrients are carbohydrates, protein and fats. They provide energy and/or the building blocks needed for normal bodily functions. Fibre is a type of carbohydrate and is also an important consideration when looking at overall diet quality.

and your micros?

Micronutrients are vitamins and minerals that the body needs in much smaller quantities.

Small doesn't mean unimportant. Vitamins and minerals participate in a huge range of normal processes throughout the body.

you need both

This is where the idea of complete nutrition becomes useful.

A meal shouldn't be judged solely by how much protein it contains—or simply by its calorie count. Looking at the combination of macronutrients and micronutrients gives you a broader picture of what you're actually eating.

that’s the thinking behind Anthro

Anthro combines carbohydrates, protein, fats and fibre with 28 essential vitamins and minerals in each complete meal.

Not just macros. Not just micros.

The meal is the system.
